A wonderfully preserved example, this Royal Oak reference 5402SA* has all the vintage charm of a two-tone watch from the 70s, rendered in Grald Genta's classic design. The oxidation on this watch is spread evenly throughout the metal, giving it a distinguished appearance. The watch comes with its original box and papers and is an especially late example, dated to 1990.
The reference 5402 is the original Royal Oak design as penned by Grald Genta. The watch was initially only offered in steel when it was first introduced at Baselworld in 1972, while two later versions, yellow gold (BA) and two-tone (SA) were released in subsequent years. This two-tone example has an especially vintage feeling, with the yellow gold bezel and dial accents contrasting nicely against the dark grey stainless steel.
With this particular watch, the yellow gold has oxidised very evenly throughout, developing a distinctive tone and colour that only emphasises its vintage origins. This5402SAcarries the AP logo at 12 oclock, typical of later examples (from mid-400 serial onwards). The dial also features the signature tapisserie pattern, a square motif which alters the deep grey coloration of the dial as it reflects light from different angles.Meanwhile, the date aperture at 3 o'clock is a delightful shade of pale yellow that matches the yellow gold index markers. The dial also features a "Swiss Made" signature at 6 o'clock, which is understood to be an original feature of some later examples sold in the early-to-mid 90s.

Condition
This Audemars Piguet Royal Oak 5402SA is in excellent condition throughout. The case and bracelet show light signs of wear. More specifically, there are light scuffs on the lower portion of the bracelet and a light graze on the bezel between four and five o'clock, only visible in certain lighting. The dial retains a dark grey tone, whilst the luminous material on the dial and hands are a rich, even yellowish tone. The hands are markers have also developed a warm golden/brown patina, complimenting the light oxidation on the case. The engravings on the caseback are crisp and well defined.
