Overview

The Seiko 6139-6000, affectionately known among collectors as the Pogue, holds a legendary place in horological history. Not only is it one of the worlds first automatic chronographs, but it was also the first automatic chronograph worn in space, cementing its cult status among vintage watch enthusiasts.

This particular version, with a striking blue dial, stands apart from the more commonly seen yellow variant and has developed a devoted following due to its rarity, bold design, and unmistakable 1970s aesthetic.

Historical Significance

  • The First Automatic Chronograph?: In 1969, Seiko introduced the 6139 movement, putting them in a three-way race with Zenith and a Swiss consortium (Chronomatic Group) for the title of the world's first automatic chronograph. While debate continues over exact release dates, there is no doubt Seiko was among the pioneers.

  • The Pogue Legacy: The nickname comes from Colonel William Pogue, a NASA astronaut who wore a yellow-dial 6139 on the Skylab 4 mission in 1973. He famously bought it himself and wore it alongside his official Omega Speedmaster, making it the first automatic chronograph to go to space.

  • Bold 1970s Design: The 6139s case shape, integrated pushers, inner rotating bezel, and single subdial configuration give it an unmistakable retro-futuristic look. The blue dial variant adds a refined, less common take on this iconic model.
