The early 1970s was a time of great change within the watch industry, where the concept of a luxury watch in steel was a truly revolutionary idea. In 1976, the introduction of s Nautilus firmly altered the direction of luxury sports watch design offering a true competitor to Audemars Piguet's then four-year-old Royal Oak.
In 2006, Patek Philippe released the reference 5711/1A - featuring an automatic 324 calibre (SC) and ridged' dial, with horizontal grooves. The 5711 marked the return of the "Jumbo" Nautilus, previously seen in the elusive reference 3711, from 2004.
Early examples of the Nautilus are now highly sought-after by collectors, commandingincreasing prices in the vintage market. With an ever-growing waiting list, demand for the 5711 has also increased in recent years.
The 5711 re-interprets a number of signature design elements from the original Nautilus - mostly notably, the gradient dial, with horizontal grooves. Similar to its predecessor, the 5711 measures 40mm, classing it amongst the Jumbo collection. The steel, three-piece case provides water resistance up to 120m, further featuring a large screw-down crown. The reference 5711 features Patek Philippes modern interpretation of the Nautilus case, with 3-part construction, sapphire case-back and curved ears.
This steel, Nautilus 5711/1A watch is the perfect balance between utilitarian function and elegant design. The case and bracelet are excellently finished, with beveled, polished and granular surfaces. The stainless steel bracelet (with all of it's original links) has virtually no stretch. At 40mm in diameter, and only 8.3mm thick, the 5711 case is a beautiful twist of perspectives and size. The white, ridged dial includes all the traditional indications of a time-only watch, with applied hour-markers and Nautilus hands (with luminescent inserts).
The reference 5711 is powered by Patek Philippes in-house caliber 324 S C, visible through the sapphire crystal display-back. The 324 SC calibre features a central 21-carat gold rotor, Patek Philippe Seal,30 jewels, Gyromax balance (beating at 21,600 A/h) and adjusted to heat, cold, isochronism (in 5 positions).
