This is a manually wound C167, a "midiplat" example produced just a year after the automatic C107 and was another elegant addition to Roth's offering of dress watches. This is a remarkably restrained piece that retains most of Roths design cues, such as the shade of grey used on the dial and pinstripe guilloch.
The C167 was released in 1991, just a year after the C107 was introduced, serving as a refined counterpart to the aesthetic introduced, alongside the Tourbillon and chronographs Daniel Roth also created. The design of the piece is incredibly pared back, with only an hour and minute hand, but is manual winding rather than automatic.
When compared against Roth's past work at Breguet, you can see that some of his design choices were transferred, such as the straight lugs, sloped bezel and polishing throughout the white gold Ellipsocurvex-style case. Furthermore, while most of his watches were created in yellow gold, this one is distinguished by its white gold case. As a whole, the piece is incredibly pared-back.
If we focus on the dial, we see that it features Roths archetypal pinstripe guilloche, in addition to bearing Roths signature just under 12 oclock and the number of the piece, in keeping with watchmaking tradition. A silvered chapter ring bears the hour markers, which are rendered as Roman numerals. When viewed as a whole, the dial layout and case provide the wearer with immense visual satisfaction, thanks to the symmetry and contrast between rounded and angular curves. This C167 houses a Frederic Piguet 21 movement, a historically ultra thin movement, hidden behind a solid caseback.
This watch is an ideal piece for any collector looking to add an early piece from a renowned independent watchmaker to their collection, or for someone looking for an elegant, restrained watch to wear on special occasions. It also comes with its Daniel Roth box and accompanying papers.
