This is an early example of the Daniel Roth Extra Plat 2107 BA* with a yellow gold ellipsocurvex case paired with a dial adorned with clous de Paris engine turning. Its slender 6mm tall form is partly thanks to the slim self-winding calibre based on F. Piguet bauche inside. It bears many of the hallmarks that marked the early years of the independent brand as well as the experiences the master watchmaker had accrued before. It comes with a certificate of origin signed by Roth.
Created in the early 1990s, this Extra Plat reference 2107 BA is the essence of Daniel Roths philosophy and nothing more. This particularly early example is imbued with the makers signature design cues, such as the Ellipsocurvex style case, as well as details such as the clous de Paris guilloche that bring to mind his time shaping the aesthetic of modern Breguet. It is no surprise then that the relaunched Daniel Roth brand has recreated the Extra Plat Souscription in the image of this particular reference.
Measuring 35 across and 38mm long, the balanced case features short, straight lugs; a rounded bezel and the signature rounded, tubular midcase. The slim case stands just 6mm tall. The form of the midcase is only interrupted by the recess to accommodate the knurled crown. This example is forged from 18k yellow gold and is high polished all over. The closed caseback is engraved simply with the brand mark and the early serial number. It also features the precious metal hallmarks. The lugs are 20mm apart and come furnished with a black alligator grained leather strap secured by a yellow gold pin buckle from the brand.
The dial features a saut piqu rim framing a sea of clous de Paris. The brushed base for the minutes and hours chapters are also delineated with saut piqu rims. The central most portion of the dial is also adorned with clous de Paris. The minutes chapter features engraved, black plots while the hours are marked by Roman numerals. The brand mark is printed at 12 oclock while the serial number is at 6. The arrow-tipped hours and minutes hands are heat blued. The lack of a seconds indicator speaks to studied simplicity of the design.
Assembled by hand in the brands Valle de Joux workshop, thisDaniel Rothis powered by a finely finished ultra-thin self-winding calibre based on an F. Piguet bauche. It is finely decorated by hand with bridges featuring Ctes de Genve and chamfered edges and a solid gold winding rotor embellished with engine turning.
This example comes with its certificate of origin, with the serial number and specifications detailed by hand. It is also signed by Roth.
This early Extra Plat 2107 BA, being reissued in this aesthetic configuration, is desirable in that it represents a design that has stood the test of time. That it was crafted by the master watchmaker himself, and not just in his name, makes it all the more special.
